The Keck School of Medicine of USC’s Office of Educational Affairs is seeking a Distance Education Engineer to join its Center for Innovative Medical Education and Technology team. See for more information or to apply.

Serving in a technical support role, the incumbent will assist in support, function, and operations of the technologies used in the medical school’s physical learning spaces (e.g., classrooms, auditoria, and multidisciplinary teaching laboratories) and virtual environments (e.g., MediaSite recordings, live webcasts and webinars).

Job responsibilities include:

  • Provides rapid, specialized technical maintenance and customer service support for the Keck School of Medicine of USC’s faculty, staff, students, and invited speakers.
  • Maintains, operates, upgrades, services, and supports instructional classroom equipment and audio-visual systems used for both face-to-face and online delivery of instruction.
  • Identifies, diagnoses, tests, and resolves audio-visual, computing, and other technological performance problems in a multi-platform environment.
  • Assists in the on-going support of computer environments campus-wide, with special efforts geared to the instructional learning environments.
  • Provides one-on-one and one-to-many consultative services for faculty, staff, and students on the use of multimedia hardware and software. Assists faculty, staff, and students in using multimedia and computer-based resources such as various multimedia control systems and touch panels, LCD projectors, mixers, matrix switches, and amplifiers.
  • Stays informed of new technologies and hardware to improve the quality of face-to-face and distance education operations. May make recommendations as appropriate.

Job Description:

  • Manages the LMS and maximizes its use in traditional, blended and online courses
    • Coordinates and provides Blackboard support, through instructional material, student assistants, workshops, and consultation with faculty.
    • Works to constantly enhance User Experience/User Interface and functionality of the college's LMS, including accessibility of content and tools.
    • Manages Banner integration, course shell creation, and other technical issues
    • Facilitates use of the LMS as an assessment tool (surveys, learning outcomes, etc)
    • Collects data about LMS usage and disseminate appropriately
  • Instructional Design/Pedagogy
    • Assists faculty in the development and revision of online and blended courses.
    • Administers the Online Policy, which includes certifying new online teachers and courses and reviewing online courses on a 3-year cycle.
    • Supports the strategic growth of online and blended classes and program.
  • Coordinates and oversees daily operation of the Center for Teaching Excellence
    • Working with the Managing Director and Faculty Director, sets strategic direction
    • Working with the Scholarly Communications Librarian and faculty liaisons to the CTE, manages a robust calendar of programs that meets identified goals of the college, including workshops, outside speakers, and Faculty Conversations
    • Working with IT, maintains content for a robust CTE website and intranet
    • Working with the CTE Faculty Advisory Board, helps coordinate and market professional development on campus, including mentoring and classroom observations.
    • Manages SUNY-wide resources and opportunities.
    • Assesses the effectiveness/impact of the CTE itself
  • Foster innovation on campus through educational technology
    • Working with IT, identifies educational technology tools and resources that support identified faculty teaching goals, market and promote them, and supports their use across the college.
    • Supports digital humanities/digital scholarship initiatives.
    • Stays abreast of current trends in educational technology; communicate and help implement these across the college.
  • As part of the Library team,
    • Serves on various campus and SUNY-wide committees.
    • Participates in departmental activities
    • Pursues professional development and scholarly work, staying abreast of current trends.


Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Educational Technology or related field
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience working with Learning Management Systems, preferably Blackboard Learn
  • Strong commitment to customer service

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-3 Years of related experience

Additional Information:

Classification/Salary Range:  The Educational Technologist is a UUP Position. The anticipated salary for the position is $60,000 - $65,000 annually, with an outstanding benefits package. Salary will commensurate with qualifications and experience. Review of applications will commence immediately and conclude when position is filled.

Special Notes: This is a full-time calendar year appointment UUP position. Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.
