1. Who can join?
The COTE Community is for anyone interested in improving their online teaching and learning practices, those who support online faculty in any way, those interested in technology-enhanced instruction, and for those who are also willing to share what they know and learn. You can join regardless of your affiliation with SUNY, Open SUNY, or the LMS you use. It's easy and free to join! (Find out more information on how to join.)

2. What is the difference between a forum, blog, and chat?

  • The Forum is designed for discussions. Anyone can start, or participate in a Forum discussion.
  • The Blog is where you can post your more formal thoughts or opinions and invite comments. Blog posts are submitted for approval prior to publication.
  • The Chat lets anyone who is online at the same time interact in real time.

3. Can I create a group?
Yes! You can create a group on any topics related to online teaching and learning. Do you have online teaching and learning expertise that you want to share on a specific topic? Are you interested discipline-specific online teaching and learning issues? Create a group and submit it for approval and invite others to share your affinity for the topic!

4. Can anyone see what is posted on this network?
Yes. All content on the network is available for public viewing. Certain groups may be private. If you have more questions about how this works, check out the Help Section.

5. Why is a birth date required to join this network? Shouldn't my institutional affiliation and email address be sufficient?
Age information is required by Ning, the platform for this network,  to verify that people signing up are eligible for an account. Prospective members can review the Ning Terms of  Service page at http://about.ning.com/tos.php,  which notes that the Ning platform is not directed to children younger than 13 and is offered only to users 13 years of age or older. The date of birth requirement to join a Ning network serves to keep the Ning Network in compliance with the Ning Terms of Service. A birth dates required to sign up, and the question is not removable. Once you join, you can opt to hide your age in your Settings page > Profile by selecting one of the following options from the drop-down menu: display birthday and age, just birthday, or neither of these two pieces of information.
